Masseria Rossignolo is a traditional late-19th-century farmstead located in the heart of Central Sicily. Situated in Contrada Castagna, in the territory of Nicosia, the farmstead’s most striking feature is its construction against a massive sandstone cliff. Long before the stone buildings were erected, caves had been hand-carved into this rock and used as ancient dwellings.
Today, the farmhouse and these ancient rock-cut rooms (aggrottati) intersect perfectly, forming a series of spaces once vital to rural life. Carved into the rock overlooking the main courtyard is a large palmento (traditional winery) dating back to 1855. Other hand-carved caves surround the two main buildings: the larger one, which served as the master’s residence, and the smaller one, once home to the sharecropper’s family.
Inside the master’s residence, beautifully restored and preserved, you can admire exquisite Art Nouveau (Liberty style) floral ceiling decorations, pastel-colored polychrome walls, and original tiled floors with intricate floral and geometric patterns. Just a short walk from the courtyard stands the small rural chapel, built in 1891 and still consecrated to St. Ursula. This chapel served the devout family of the landowner, who counted several priests and nuns among their kin; to this day, the altar still holds the relics of the Saint.
Masseria Rossignolo is a magical setting for food and wine tastings featuring "Zero-km" local products paired with excellent Sicilian and national wines. Guests can also enjoy a guided tour of the estate, exploring the evocative rock-cut dwellings, the historic wine press, and the private family chapel.
Masseria Rossignolo is a proud member of the "Nicosia di Sicilia" circuit.
