A town carved in stone

The historic centre preserves noble palaces, fountains, balconies, arches and churches. The ancient gateways of Porta Palermo and Porta Messina lead into a network of streets, stairways and unexpected views. Above the town, the remains of the castle occupy a panoramic position overlooking the mountains, the sea and, on the clearest days, the Aeolian Islands.

Churches and museums

The oldest part of the town is centred around the Mother Church. The churches of San Sebastiano, San Giovanni and Santa Caterina, together with Mistretta’s other religious buildings, preserve artworks and important evidence of the town’s artistic heritage.

The “Egidio Ortolani” Civic Museum documents the history and culture of Mistretta. The “Giuseppe Cocchiara” Regional Museum of Woodland and Pastoral Traditions, dedicated to the distinguished Mistretta-born anthropologist and folklorist, explores the material culture of Sicily’s inland communities: shepherds, woodcutters, charcoal burners, farmers and craftspeople, together with the production cycles and traditional knowledge that shaped the Sicilian landscape.

Mithia, Cronos and the Madonna della Luce

The celebration of the Madonna della Luce is inseparable from Mithia and Cronos, the two Giants who accompany one of Mistretta’s most distinctive traditions. The ritual brings together devotion, collective memory and popular participation, transforming the town’s streets into a shared community space.

Beyond the town, Serra Merio, Urio Quattrocchi and the Serro Merio–Portella dell’Obolo route lead visitors into the landscapes of the Nebrodi Regional Park. Woodlands, clearings and mountain trails reveal how deeply nature is woven into Mistretta’s identity.
