Motta d’Affermo stands approximately 660 metres above sea level, on a ridge in the western Nebrodi. From this panoramic position, the landscape opens towards the Halaesa Valley and reaches the Tyrrhenian coast, where the municipal territory meets the sea at Torremuzza.

It is a compact village where rural landscapes and proximity to the coast offer remarkably different experiences within the same journey.

From ancient Sparto to Motta d’Affermo

The village’s medieval origins are connected with the ancient name of Sparto and the monastery of Santa Maria di Sparto. Institutional sources describe the territory as a feudal estate as early as the Norman period and document its presence in the 1296 census of the Barons of Aragon.

This long history can still be recognised in the urban fabric, religious buildings and civil architecture encountered while exploring the village.

The village and its architecture

Walking through Motta d’Affermo means discovering streets, squares and viewpoints shaped over time around the life of the community.

The Mother Church of Maria Santissima degli Angeli, the Church of San Rocco and the Church of San Pietro bear witness to the village’s religious heritage.

The Church of San Pietro is undergoing a regional conservation and restoration programme, together with the redevelopment of its surrounding areas, intended to return an important place of collective memory fully to the community.

Palazzo Minneci, a home for culture

Palazzo Minneci is one of Motta d’Affermo’s most representative civil buildings. Known in local memory as i casi ranni, it has been restored to host cultural activities and initiatives connected with the community and the territory.

Its revival reflects a clear vision: preserving historic heritage not merely as evidence of the past, but as a place brought back to life through music, meetings and culture.

From the mountains to the sea at Torremuzza

The territory of Motta d’Affermo descends from the hills towards the Tyrrhenian coast. Torremuzza represents its seaside identity and adds the landscape of the sea to the story of the village.

This continuity between the hills and the coast allows visitors to experience different environments within a short distance: the historic centre, the countryside, views across the valley and the shoreline.

Fiumara d’Arte in the landscape of Motta d’Affermo

The territory contains two works belonging to Fiumara d’Arte, the open-air museum created by Antonio Presti. In both, contemporary art enters into a direct relationship with nature.

Energia mediterranea (Mediterranean Energy), created by Antonio Di Palma in 1989, is a large blue concrete wave that appears to emerge from the mountain. Its flowing shape creates an ideal connection between the hills and the sea visible in the distance.

Piramide – 38° parallelo (Pyramid – 38th Parallel), created by Mauro Staccioli in 2010, stands on a hill crossed precisely by the 38th parallel. The large hollow tetrahedron in weathering steel dominates the landscape, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aeolian Islands and the area of ancient Halaesa. Every year, the work becomes the centre of the Rito della Luce, the Ritual of Light associated with the summer solstice.

Traditions and flavours of the land

The religious celebrations dedicated to San Rocco and San Sebastiano, together with music, cultural initiatives and food events, bring the village community together and welcome both returning residents and first-time visitors.

Agricultural production remains closely connected with the landscape. Olive oil, hazelnuts and wild oregano are distinctive products of the Motta d’Affermo area. The oregano growing naturally on its hills is particularly valued for the intensity of its fragrance and flavour.
