Santo Stefano di Camastra overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea like a terrace suspended between the coast and the mountains. It is one of the municipalities belonging to the Nebrodi Regional Park and represents a gateway where the coastal landscape meets the history and traditions of inland Sicily.

A town reborn and carefully designed

The present town was founded in 1683, after a landslide destroyed the earlier settlement of Santo Stefano di Mistretta. Duke Giuseppe Lanza di Camastra provided the land and planned the new urban layout according to a geometric design: a square crossed by diagonal streets, with a diamond shape at its centre.

This structure can still be recognised while walking through the historic centre, giving Santo Stefano di Camastra its distinctive, orderly character.

Ceramics as identity

After the settlement moved towards the coast, shepherds and farmers also became fishermen, craftspeople and potters. Clay and the work of the figuli, the traditional potters, gradually shaped the economy and culture of the community.

The workshops and ancient stazzuna, where clay was formed and fired, preserve the memory of a tradition that continues in contemporary production. Visiting Santo Stefano means entering a living, open-air museum in which ceramic art is part of everyday life.

Palazzo Trabia and the Ceramics Museum

Built at the end of the seventeenth century and overlooking a panoramic terrace, Palazzo Trabia preserves frescoed ceilings and floors created by the historic ceramic masters of Santo Stefano.

Since 1994 it has housed the Ceramics Museum, where artworks, tiles, jars and traditional objects document the development of local production and the dialogue between craftsmanship and contemporary art.

Churches, squares and the sea

The Mother Church, the Church of Calvario, the squares and decorated streets create an urban itinerary in which architecture and ceramics continually meet.

The relationship with the sea completes the town’s identity. From the centre and its panoramic viewpoints, visitors can look across the Tyrrhenian coast, while the mountain landscapes of the Nebrodi begin just behind the town.

The Letto Santo Sanctuary in the Park landscape

At an altitude of 882 metres, the Letto Santo Sanctuary stands on the summit of Monte Santa Croce. It is a place of worship and pilgrimage offering extensive views over the valleys, the Nebrodi and the Madonie mountains.

The route to the sanctuary reveals another side of Santo Stefano di Camastra: not only a coastal town of ceramics, but also a territory deeply connected with the mountains and the Nebrodi Regional Park.
